Team for Gasification Technology
The core activity of this research group concerns the development of conversion methods and processes for application of solid fuels and waste materials in the production of heat, power and chemicals, primarily through gasification, but also combustion and pyrolysis processes. Throughout a number of national and international projects and co-operations, the Team has obtained competence in the conversion of a vast range of feedstocks, such as coals (lignites and hard coals containing high-ash and sulphur), biomasses (agricultural, energy crops, forest and waste residues also of high-ash or low-melting temperature) and waste materials (Solid Recovered Fuels ? SRF, sewage sludge). The research is performed mostly in pilot-scale installations that can be divided based on the type of reactor used and their pressure rating. The most important installations are:
- The testing plant for pressurized gasification in CFB reactor (up to 15 barg and 150 kg of fuel/h),
- The testing plant for atmospheric gasification in CFB reactor (up to 250 kg of fuel/h),
- The testing plant for atmospheric gasification in GazEla reactor (up to 20 kg of fuel/h), which is a proprietary construction of fixed-bed type,
however, often invaluable is to begin the research in smaller, laboratory scale, which is also performed comprehensively by IChPW. This group also performs research and testing on development of process gas treatment methods, with special attention paid towards economically-sound removal of tars, solids, deep-cleaning of the gas for chemical applications as well as management of organic and inorganic wastes. The works can be carried out in either, dry, or wet treatment systems of various configurations. Thus, expertise in hot gas filtration, oil and water scrubbing, as well as adsorbers and mist separator, has been gathered and developed here for more than 40 years.
Finally, the energetic and chemical utilization of the cleaned process gas is an important part of the scope of competence of this group. The Team has researched and developed primarily applications based on cogeneration units (piston engines and gas turbines) but now, following the interests shown by scientific and industrial sectors, the focus shifts more towards the production of liquid and gaseous fuels.
Moreover, The team is involved in research on cleaning and utilization of unconventional process gases such as biogas, mine gas, landfill-gas or coke-oven gas, but also actively acts in the field of thermochemical conversion methods tailored for specific waste materials and applications.
The Team participates in many Polish and European projects and commercial works.
