The Workshop on Organic Coal Petrology was held on 9th of March, at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa,. The event was organized by the DSCI-NRF CIMERA Center (Centre of Excellence for Integrated Mineral and Energy Resource Analysis) for the Mineralogical Association of South Africa, MINSA. MINSA is a specialist division of the Geological Society of South Africa. The workshop was part of the MINSA – Coal Utilization Series 2023. As part of the Workshop, doctor Małgorzata Wojtaszek-Kalaitzidi gave 2 lectures focused on the industrial application of Organic Petrology in the assessment of coke, chars, fly ashes and charcoal.

The meeting was held in a hybrid form and gathered both interested students and representatives of the energy and metallurgical industries from South Africa. A visit to the University of Johannesburg and participation in the workshops gave an opportunity to present the possibilities and competences of ITPE.

Poland and South Africa are traditionally mining countries where the industry utilises energy from fossil fuels. In Poland, approx. 79 percent of energy comes from fossil fuels, and in South Africa it is 77 percent. In the processing of coal into liquid fuels, chemicals, and gasification South Africa, next to China, it is a world leader. Establishing cooperation with scientific and industrial units from South Africa may bring mutual benefits to both countries.
