On May 12 and 13, 2022 doctor Małgorzata Wojtaszek-Kalaitzidi from Institute for Chemical Processing of Coal in Zabrze, delivered a series of lectures for MSc students as part of the “Geological, Industrial and Environmental Applications of Organic Petrology” course at the Department of Geology, University of Patras (Greece). The lectures followed the official invitation from Prof. Dr. Kimon Christanis – the course co-ordinator.

The lectures covered the following issues:

  • solid fuel combustion process, microscopic identification and characterization of fly ash and its classification according to the international nomenclature;
  • microscopic analysis of the detection of unacceptable impurities of charcoal and charcoal briquettes for the grill, definition of unacceptable impurities and their morphology, identification of biomass chars and waste chars;
  • coal coking process, coking coal quality and petrography of chars and cokes.

During the stay, the doctor also conducted laboratory exercises on microscopic analysis of charcoal briquette samples, where she discussed in detail the analytic procedure and helped to describe the samples of charcoal briquettes which are part of the master’s thesis of one of the present students
